There are several detail in Nectar in a Sieve that show the importance of the conflict between Eastern and Western cultures and its impact on the people. One of the most important aspects showing East vs. West is Dr. Kenny. Dr. Kenny influences the book in many ways to show some differences in the Western and Eastern cultures. He shows that in the old times, the Westerns were more educated and wealthier and more protected by their government. Even though the Western could provide more for their residents, their world was only based on money, government, and business, not around the civilians.
When Dr. Kenny became more involved in the book, we could see that he lived better than Rukmani and Nathan. We could see that he was more educated, had a better job (Doctor), and was wealthier. With this fact, it shows that Kenny being wealthy, gave him a reason on why he wouldn't starve. Without the money he got from becoming a doctor and living with his family, he would have starved just like Rukmani and Nathan's family. This shows that Western Culture was more educated and wealthier in some ways.
Living in the "New World", Kenny and his family must have witnessed the Britain government help the citizens when required. When he came to the Eastern part of the world to India, he sees the government of Rukmani's village and how they cannot support the village in anyway. An example is when there was the storm or the drought upon Rukmani's village, the government could not do anything to assist. All the hierarchy government such as landlords could think about was the payment made to them from their vassals. This shows that the Western government could provide and facilitate more for their citizens that the Old World's government.
As showed by the tannery, when Rukmani's son, Raja died, the managers of the tannery came not to show sympathy to Rukmani, but just to see if they wouldn't have a lawsuit upon them. This shows that the people of the tannery (who reflected the Western culture) cared more about their business than the people. Also even though the people from Rukmani's village were going through starvation, and the tannery had some meat to give, the tannery didn't give anything and continued their business as usual. This shows that the Western culture is more reflected upon business, government, and money, while the Eastern World is more based upon care and respect for the people.
To sum it all up, Western and Eastern world clash together to form very different cultures in past, in the present, and will be in the future as well. The tow world have different view points and different ideas on how to live life. In many ways the Western world could help out more for their citizens, but the Eastern world showed care, love, and respect in hard times. People in both ends of the worlds live different types of lives, but can still interact with each other as if they were family members.
